Presented at the School of Creative Arts Closer Look Lecture Series

As part of the Closer Look Lecture Series, the School of Creative Arts at the University of Saint Francis will host a photographer’s lecture and book signing by Sam Abell through the Canon Explorers of Light Program on Tuesday, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the North Campus Auditorium, 2702 Spring Street. Mr. Abell's lecture 'The Photographic Life' illuminates the adventures and misadventures encountered while making some of National Geographic's most recognized images. His lecture also takes up the intriguing question of what gives life to a photograph.

Sam Abell is an American photographer whose 30-year career has been dedicated to achieving artistic expression through documentary photography. He has pursued his goals primarily through his in-depth coverage for National Geographic magazine and its Book Division. At the same time, he has maintained a career as an artist, teacher and author.

Originally from Sylvania, Ohio, Abell graduated from the University of Kentucky in Lexington, and received an honorary Doctor of Letters degree from the University of Toledo. Mr. Abell is a member of the board of the directors of the Santa Fe Center for Photography, the George Eastman House and the University of Virginia Art Museum. In 2002 he collaborated with Leah Bendavid-Val on a retrospective of his life and work titled Sam Abell: The Photographic Life, published by Rizzoli. He is also the author of the book Seeing Gardens, published in 2001. Mr. Abell's most recent book The Life of a Photograph was published in 2008 by National Geographic. He will be available to sign copies of the book after his lecture.
